Finally BSNL 5G Launched
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has officially launched its Quantum 5G (Q-5G) Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) service in Hyderabad, marking its entry into the 5G broadband market. This SIM-less, 100% indigenous solution aims to provide high-speed internet to Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities where fiber connectivity is limited. The service targets households, offices, and small businesses, offering:
- Plans: Rs 999 for 100 Mbps and Rs 1,499 for 300 Mbps.
- Technology: Uses Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) installed on rooftops to connect to BSNL’s 5G towers, eliminating the need for SIMs or fiber cables.
- Performance: Initial tests show peak download speeds of 980 Mbps, upload speeds of 140 Mbps, and latency below 10 milliseconds.
- Expansion Plans: The soft launch in Hyderabad will be followed by pilot projects in Bengaluru, Pondicherry, Visakhapatnam, Pune, Gwalior, and Chandigarh by September 2025, with a nationwide rollout planned thereafter.
- Significance: BSNL’s Q-5G is the first SIM-less 5G FWA service in India, built on a home-grown Direct-to-Device platform for automatic authentication.
The service is positioned to compete with private players like Jio and Airtel, focusing on affordability and digital inclusion in underserved areas. BSNL has not yet launched nationwide 5G mobile services, but this FWA rollout is a significant step.
